On the 19th August 1904, C R Gardner, while bathing in the sea at Tynemouth, was swept out 70 yards into 9 feet of water. G Hutchinson and G Claughton swam out, but were unable to save him. Captain H.E. Burton of the Tynemouth Lifeboat then went out and managed to bring him in.
