PAIR: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. M.29723 J.Fowler. Act. E.R.A. 4 R.N., 7 over 6 on first medal. Impressed. In contemporary case, uncirculated.

On 29 January 1940 the British cargo steamer, SS Stanburn, was sunk SE of Flamborough Head off the Yorkshire coast after being struck by three bombs during a bombing raid by German Stuker dive bombers. Royal Navy Engine Room Artificer John Fowler was one of the crew killed in the raid. There were only three survivors. With newspaper clippings relating to the sinking and In Memoriam on active service list including John Fowler.
