ROWLAND HILL, column at Shrewsbury, 1816, in bronze (54mm) (BHM 912), obverse, bare bust of Hill right, around 'Rowland Lord Hill', reverse, column in honour of Hill, 1816 below, around top, 'Animo Non Astutia' (By courage not cunning). Good bronze patination with some surface marks, otherwise extremely fine.

Rowland Hill, Lord of Hawkstone was a distinguished officer in the Napoleonic War, especially in Spain with his successes being commemorated in Shrewsbury by the erection of the Lord Hill Column, said to be the highest Doric column in the world. Hill was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo in 1815. Together with biography of Lord Hill.
