Field Marshall Sir Bernard Montgomery, nicknamed Monty, commanded the 8th Army from August 1942 in the Western Desert until the final allied victory in Tunisia including the historic Battle of El Alamein where his decisive victory was a major turning point in the war. He had an illustrious military career during and post war.
