TASMANIA, High School of Hobart Town (est.1848), share certificate no.18 for twenty five pounds, in name of William Roberston, undated. Good very fine.
William Robertson (1798-1874) was born in Scotland. He emigrated to Van Diemen’s Land becoming one of its prominent citizens through his membership of the Port Phillip Association which led to the first European settlement of Victoria. He also explored the western district of Victoria with Joseph Gellibrand and William Buckley. When Robertson died he had an extensive property holding at Colac which was divided equally between his four children and in 2004 he was listed number 141 in the top 200 all-time Australian rich list with an estimated 2004 value of $1.83 billion.
