M.SERGIUS Silus, (116-115 B.C.), silver denarius, (3.81 grams), obv. Roma helmeted head right, EX SC before, ROMA * behind, rev. horseman galloping left, with sword and barbarian head, Q/M.SERGI below, SILVS in exergue, (S.163, Cr.286/1, Syd.534, Sergia 1). Minor surface pitting, otherwise toned very fine or better.

Silus issued this coin in his offical capacity as quaestor under direct mandate of the senate (EX SC). The reverse commemorates the bravery of his grandfather Sergius Silus who fought in the second Punic war, receiving twenty three wounds and losing his right arm. He rectified this disability by ordering a replacement made of iron.
