L. PAPIUS, (c.79 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.72 grams), obv. Juno Sospita head to right, wearing goat's skin, symbol behind (plumb-bob?), rev. Gryphon prancing to right, set square symbol below, L PAPI in exergue, (S.311, Cr.384/1, Syd.773, RSC Papia 1). Serrated, slightly off centre, toned, nearly very fine and very scarce.

Ex Charles E. Weber collection and Triton VII auction, lot 1357 (part). With detailed collector’s tickets. The fascinating series of symbols appearing on the issues of Papius are mostly associated with the trade guilds.
