NEW ZEALAND MEDAL, converted to a tribute medal, reverse wreath and dates removed and inscribed, 'In Memory/of/James Bates/of 58th regiment Grenadier Guards/arrived in Auckland in the year 1845/to take part in the Native trouble at the/Bay of Islands/He departed this life on the/15th day of July 1870 aged 48/Inserted by request of his eldest Son/William Henry Bates/1914', edge of medal with name of original recipient, '1886. Pte G.Kelly. 58th Foot.' Original suspender replaced with loop suspender, very fine.
