EGYPT, Kingdom of, Ptolemy III, (246-221 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (14.102 grams), Alexandria mint, obv. diademed head of Ptolemy I to right wearing aegis, rev. eagle to left with closed wings, standing on thunderbolt around **SWTHROS PTOLEMAIOU*, to left cornucopiae, (cf.S.7806, Sv.1001, SNG Cop.167, BMC 83 [p.54], Hunter 20). Good very fine, some dirt on the reverse and a rare type.

Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 48 (lot 2760) and Classical Numismatic group Auction in Boston September 9, 1994 (lot 565, illustrated, $600US). CNG comment on this piece by stating that the style would seem to indicate a branch mint, but which one is uncertain (See Svoronos Pl.XXVI, 26 for similar piece with title **BASILEWS* instead of **SWTHROS*).
