SICILY, Syracuse, The Syracusan Democracy, (214-212 B.C.), silver twelve litrai, (10.17 grams), obv. head of Athena to left wearing crested Corinthian helmet, ornamented with griffin, rev. Artemis standing left in short chiton with quiver on shoulder and discharging an arrow from her bow, at her feet a hound running left, to right **SURAKOSIWN*, to left **CAR*, (cf.S.997, BMC 652, cf.SNG ANS 1218). Lightly toned, sharply struck, extremely fine with a powerful portrait, rare.
