CLAUDIUS, (A.D. 41-54), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 42, (19.54 grams), obv. laureate head of Claudius to right, around TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM [TR P IMP], rev. SPES AVGVSTA around, Spes draped advancing to left, right hand holding flower, left raising skirt, (S.1853 [£150 F], RIC 99, cf.C.85, BMC 124, CBN 165). Some smoothing in fields, otherwise, nearly very fine and rare.

The portrait is of fine style but the coin lacks a full flan, Probably a British imitative issue very similar in portrait style and reverse Spes of Simonetti 'Corpus Nvmmorvm Romanorvm' No.682 described as a type I British Provincial imitation.
