C. COELIUS CALDUS, (c.51 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.69 grams), obv. C. COEL CALDVS before head of the consul C. Coelius Caldus to right, boar lower right, standard inscribed HIS behind, rev. L.CALDVS III VIR EPVL on base between two trophies, figure of L.Caldus seated above base preparing the feast of Jupiter, flanked by trophy with circular shield on left, and trophy with trumpet and oval shield on right, C CALDVS downward on left, IMP A on right, CALDVS III VIR in exergue, (S.404, Cr. 437/2a, Syd.894, B.Coelia 7). Attractively toned with a spectacular portrait of Caldus, slightly off centre otherwise extremely fine and rare.
