L. LIVINEIUS REGULUS, (42 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.94 grams), obv. head of praetor L. Livineius Regulus to right, rev. combat scene between gladiators and wild beasts, one combatant attacks a lion, another faces a tiger, a wounded boar sits at left, L.REGVLVS in exergue, (S.489, Cr.494/30, Syd.1112, RSC.Livineia 12). Attractive grey patina, slightly off centred with an area of flat striking on the reverse, otherwise nearly extremely fine and rare.

Ex Spink & Son with ticket. This type records the appointment of the moneyer's father as praetor and his own appointment as praefectus Urbi. The wild beast hunts depicted on the obverse of this coin were held under the direction of the city praefects.
