Charles Manning Reed was the grandson of the first settler of Erie, Pennsylvania. He qualified as a lawyer and was a Colonel of militia in 1831 rising to the rank of Brigadier General. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1837 and 1838 and was elected as a Whig to the twenty-eighth Congress. He died in 1871.
