ITALY, Tuscany, Ferdinand di Medici (1587-1609), Pisa mint, silver tallero, 1595, (28.38 g), obv. radiate crowned and cuirassed half figure right, holding sceptre, around .FERDINANDVS. MED. MAG. ETR. DVX. III. 1595, rev. around .PISA.IN. VETVSTAE. MAIESTATIS. MEMORIAM, Medici arms, shield supported on crowned Maltese cross, (D.8392). Natural edge flaw with old file marks, otherwise good very fine and rare.

The type was struck in 1595, 1600-01, 1603-1608, and the denomination continued under later rulers to the end of the 17th century. The original type was struck to the standard of the Saxon taler for trade with the Levant but it was below the Tuscan standard and consequently it was prohibited from circulation within Tuscany.
