SICILY, Selinus, (520-500 B.C.), silver didrachm, (8.61 g), obv. selinon leaf, rev. incuse square divided into triangles, (S.730, ANS MN 33, Pl. 2, No.25, [This Coin]). Attractive reverse tone, slight surface roughness on obverse, otherwise very fine/extremely fine and very rare.
Ex Alan Jordan Collection and purchased from Noble Numismatics Sale 81 (lot 3196) and before from Noble Numismatics Sale 59 (lot 1810) and previously from the Selinus Archaic Silver Hoard, (this hoard contained 35 coins of Selinus, the most ever found of this mint in a hoard and a total of 165 silver coins and four silver ingots). The hoard was buried between 510-500 B.C. and is consequently the earliest of its kind ever found in Sicily. The reverse die on this coin is die linked to three other coins in the hoard.
