SOLD $360

IONIA, Ephesus, (390-330 B.C.), silver plated tetradrachm, (13.73 g), obv. bee with straight wings dividing E - **F, rev. forepart of kneeling stag to right, looking back, palm tree behind, to right magistrate's name **[DE]INOSTRATOS* (Deinostratos), (cf.S.4373, Coin Hoards IX Pixodarus Hoard Class E [p.202], Head p.35 [not noted for this Magistrate]). Some edge corrosion and tooling on the obverse and reverse, otherwise very fine.

Ex Alan Jordan Collection and purchased from Noble Numismatics Sale 68 (lot 1890) and previously from Spink America, Sale March 7, 1995 (lot 42 illustrated). The issue with curved wings is much rarer than the straight wing issue. BMC attributes this straight wing type as later than the curved wing and places a date of post 387 B.C. Ephesus used the Rhodian standard, during the fourth century B.C. This magistrate joins a group of new magistrates previously recorded only from the Pixodarus Hoard as noted by Ashton but this example from a plated pair of dies is unlisted by Ashton.
