C. VALERIUS FLACCUS, (82 B.C.), silver denarius, Massalia mint, (3.42 g), obv. draped and winged bust of Victory to right, control symbol (prow) behind head, rev. [C VAL FLA] to left, legionary eagle between two standards inscribed H (hastati) and P (principes), IMPERAT to right, EX S C below, (S.288, Cr.365/1, Syd.747a, Valeria 12-12b). Very fine with attractive toning, very scarce.

This issue was struck in Massalia by special decree of the Senate (ex senatus consulto) under the direction of Flaccus when he was proconsul in Gaul.
