ELIZABETH II, 1966 Pattern silver five pounds, 'the R.G. Hunt and Anthony M. Foley pattern silver five pounds piece', (37.72 grams), obv. conjoined busts of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh to left, rev. Britannia as Boadicea in chariot to left. Proof-like, one of twenty produced, uncirculated and very rare.
Ex Format Catalogue List 25 of November 1983 (No.3067) and Noble Numismatics Sale 92 (lot 3335).
The lot includes several photocopies of letters and documents on this issue. It was suggested in 1966 to the Chancellor of the Exchequer that gold twenty five pounds and silver five pound pieces be produced. Foley made a case that these would earn in excess of ten million pounds in foreign currency. Pattern pieces were produced by Hunt and Foley and sent to the Chancellor and the Prime Minister. It is believed only twenty of these patterns were struck.
