Frederick Townsend, painter, age 20, born at Walcot, Bath, England; Enl.21Nov1851 in Royal Artillery at Bath; served 21 years 2 days, of this 1 year 2 months served in Crimea and 6 years 10 months in India; Townsend never received a LS&GC Medal as he appeared in the Regimental Defaulters Book four times and was twice tried by Court Martial; Serving with 3 Battery RHA he was promoted to Cpl in Nov1857, Sgt in Apr1858, reduced to Gunner in Oct1858, by Nov1861 was Sgt, the Battery Sgt Mjr in Jun1865 and finally Brigade Sgt Mjr in Aug1869; Disch.25Nov1872. With copies of service record papers.
