CILICIA, Ninica-Claudiopolis, Maximinus I (235-238), AE 29, (14.16 g), obv. C IVL V**P*. MAXIMU**G* CAET (sic), laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maximinus I to right, rev. around COL NINIC, CLAV**D* in exergue, she-wolf standing right under tree, suckling the twins, (cf.S.3548, SNG France -; SNG Levante -; SNG Pf„lzer 981 (same dies); CNG E-238, (lot 244 same dies); Knker 143, lot 624 (same dies). Good very fine with attractive earthen green patina, rare and interesting.
Ex Kelly J. Krizan, M.D. Collection; Classical Numismatic Group 53, 15 March 2000 (lot 1138) and with ticket. An unusual coin combining a portrait a of Maximinus I and a blundered obverse legend for Maximus as Caesar. It is seemingly the work of an engraver with little knowledge of Latin in a region where Greek was the lingua franca.
