DSO GROUP OF FIVE: Distinguished Service Order (GVR); 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19 with MID; Territorial Decoration (GVR). First medal unnamed, Capt.R.M.Horsfield. R.F.A. on second medal, Major R.M.Horsfield. on third and fourth medals, last medal unnamed. All named medals impressed. Court mounted, extremely fine.

Together with Army Orders printed in colour on board for Immediate Awards by General Sir H.S. Rawlinson, Bart., K.C.B., K.C.V.O., Commanding Fourth Army.

DSO: Supplement to LG 26/9/1917, p9968 (details LG 9/1/1918, p563).

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Amidst intense hostile shelling and exploding ammunition, he went to his battery and cut away the camouflage which had been set on fire by enemy shell fire. But for his gallantry and determination to stay the progress of the fire, the whole battery would undoubtedly have been put out of action.

Richard Marshall Horsfield, born 03Apr1881 in Leeds, England; attended Leeds Grammar School then Leeds University; commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 1st West Riding Regt RGA Vols 18Jun1902; promoted to Lieutenant 30Jul1904; to 1st West Riding Bde, RFA (Territorial Forces) 01Apr1908; promoted to Captain 20Mar1912; Emb 14Apr1915 for France with his unit; promoted to Major 01Jun1916; 26Sep1917 immediate award of DSO; to command 178 Bde 09Nov1918; promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 21Nov1918; to command 245 Bde (Germany) 15Mar1919; relinquished commission 09Nov1919; resigned commission 02Dec1922 and granted the rank of Lt-Colonel; died 06Oct1940 at age 59.
