Recommendation: 'On the morning of 9th May, 1915, at Monash Valley, Sergeant Cross was one of about forty officers and men who charged a Turkish trench immediately in front of Quinn's Post. Only about 12 reached their objective. The leader of the charge, Captain Townsend was wounded. Seeing that it was impossible for such a small party to hold the advanced position Sergeant Cross started back to our trenches with Captain Townsend, and when half way back, the wounded officer was killed. Sergeant Cross, then went back to the small force at the Turkish trench, knowing all the time, that it was only a matter of minutes before the whole party would have to retire. The occasion referred to therein is not the first time on which conspicuous bravery has been shown by Sergeant Cross.'
