Head of Roma r. helmeted, wreath behind, [* and ROMA] below, Rev. Dioscuri galloping in opposite directions, C. SERVEILI.M.[F] in exerque; another M. Marcius Mn.f., silver denarius, c.134 B.C., 3.84 grams, Rome Mint, Crawford 245/1, Sydenham 500, BMC 1008, B. Marcia 8, Obv. Head of Roma r. helmeted, below chin *, and modius behind, Rev. Victory in biga r. below M MAR C/ ROMA (MAR ligated), divided by two ears of corn, (illustrated). Fine; very fine, both scarce (1518, 1519). (2)
Ex C.Pitchfork Collection and both from the Dr. John Sawhill Collection and from the James Madison University. Sold by Stacks New York, March 15, 1979 (lot 333 and 338 parts respectively).
The first coin Moneyer cannot be identified with the C. Servilius in the list of provincial governors in Cicero, Div. in Caec. 63 and is not otherwise known. The second coin has a moneyer named M. Marcius Mn. f. and not otherwise known. The modius and corn ears refer to an ancestor, Mn. Marcius, 'aedilis plebis primum frumentum populo in modios assibus datavit' (Pliny, NH xviii, 15), at some time before L. Minucius did the same.
