CHINA, Kwangtung Province, possible modern copy of silver dollar, obv. 'Kuang-hsu Yuan-pao, 7 mace and 3 candareens', rev. dragon emblem,in centre 'made in Kwangtung Province' below denomination etc. original type issued 1889, diameter 39mm, thickness 2.5mm, weight (27.32 g), (cf.Kann 16, KM.Y.198). Delightful grey and blue patination, about as struck, nearly uncirculated.
Ex Alan Jordan Collection.
The issue is very rare. This piece has correct weight, thickness and diameter as published by Kann, however the striking is weak, it comes from different dies to the Baldwin published example. The Chinese letters in some cases shows doubling on several characters but that could be from lack of initial pressure on the dies as the dragon itself shows weakness on the high point of its scales.
