AUSTRIA, collection of eighteen commemorative medals issued over many years from the late 1800s in various base metals, all by Lauer, in purpose built case of the period, possibly for a collector or as a sample case used to demonstrate the designer's styles. Case worn, medals with toning and a few with verdigris spots, overall extremely fine. (18)

Ludwig Christian Lauer, the Nuremberg medallist and Rechenpfennig manufacturer, started his business in 1848 following on the business established by his great-grandfather. After his death in 1873, the business was continued by his widow and three sons. In the second half of the nineteenth century the Lauer business was a leading German manufacturer of medals, tokens, play money and related products.
