GROUP OF FOUR TO DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIAL: 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19; Coronation Medal 1937. 135 Pte F.McCallum. 6/F.A. Amb. A.I.F. on first medal, Captain F.C.McCallum: A.I.F. on second and third medals, last medal unnamed as issued. All named medals impressed. Display mounted on red backing, very fine.

Coronation Medal entitlement confirmed as awarded to Frank McCallum, Senior Medical Officer, Dept of Health.

Frank McCallum, medical student, age 24, born at Ararat, Victoria; Enl.18Nov1914 at Melbourne, Victoria and appointed to No.1 Aust Gen Hosp; previous service with Senior Cadets and still serving with Melbourne University Rifles; Emb.05Dec1914; 30Aug1915 to Gallipoli; 22Oct1915 to hospital Anzac with Enteric Fever then to various hospitals at Malta, Hospital Ship 'Salta', Heliopolis, Port Said, and then invalided to Australia; RTA 29Feb1916 with Enteric Fever; Disch.12Apr1916; returned to university and completed medical degree - M.B., B.S. November 1917; applied for a commission in AAMC, AIF with current rank of Sgt Major with Melbourne University Rifles; Appointed Captain in AIF to date from 19Dec1917; Emb.21Mar1918; TOS AIF in England 24May1918 then to France, serving with various medical units and as RMO of 43Bn, 44 Bn and 3rd MG Bn; RTA 22Dec1919; Appointment terminated 18Mar1920.

Frank McCallum, son of Rev. Alexander McCallum D.D. of Melbourne, educated at Wesley College, Melbourne and Melbourne University. After war service at Gallipoli and in France he joined the Commonwealth Quarantine Service 1920. His other achievements include Rockefeller Foundation Travelling Fellowship, USA and England 1922-23; Director, Division of Epidemiology, Commonwealth Department of Health 1927; Chief Medical Officer, Australia House, London 1929-32; and Chief Quarantine Officer (General) N.E. Div., Commonwealth Department of Health since 1934, was Deputy Director General up to 1945 and Director General 1945-46, dying in office 1946.
