HORACE GREELEY SIGNATURE, on letter note page affixed to an identical size sheet (13.2x19.2cm) written in ink from 'New York, Oct (crossed out) Nov. 1 written over 2, 1860' to 'Hon John A. King, Jamaica, New York', with the letter reading, 'Dear Sir: The bearer, Mr. Theo. Tilton, is one of our best and most promising young Republicans. He goes down to speak for you this evening, and you will find him able and effective. Yours, Horace Greeley'; also an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Greeley (approx 6x9cm). Some light rippling, paper clip impression to top and slight show-through from writing on second sheet, otherwise fine.

Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was editor of the New York Tribune, among the great newspapers of its time. He was very active in politics and served briefly as a congressman from New York. Greeley was the candidate of the Democratic and Liberal Republican parties in the 1872 presidential election, however he was defeated by President Ulysses S. Grant on Election Day, but died before the casting of the electoral vote.

John A. King was Governor of New York 1856-59 then retired to the Manor House at Jamaica in the New York City borough of Queens.
