CONVICT TOKEN, 'Mary/Wooly/Jones' engraved on shaved down Great Britain halfpenny, on the reverse is engraved, '1796' with some decoration above and below and also around the edge on both sides. Very fine.

Mary Jones, age 23, was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 20th June (1796), a muslin shawl, value 3s the property of William Hilton, a linen-draper in Oxford Street who saw her steal the shawl. He caught her and brought her back to his shop and summoned a police officer and she was taken to Marlborough Street for charging. She was tried and convicted on 22 June 1796 at Middlesex Goal Delivery and sentenced to seven years transportation. She departed England in February 1797 aboard the convict transport Lady Shore arriving at New South Wales on 28 August 1797.
