CRUSADERS, Genovese in the North Aegean, (c.1350-1450), gold ducat, imitating Andrea Dandolo, 1344-1354, Samos or Chios (?) mint, obv. ANDR DANDVLO D/ V/ X, S/ N/ V/E/N/E/T/I, N's are reversed, St. Mark standing right, lowering head to and receiving banner from Doge kneeling left, rev. SIT TXP EDAT O TV XE ISIST E DVCAT, Christ standing facing, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels, surrounded by mandorla containing nine stars, (Ives NN&M 128 describes various types). Extremely fine and rare, obverse with evidence of die rust in the striking.
