SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS, (A.D. 193-211), silver denarius, Emesa mint, issued A.D. 194, (3.400 grams), obv. laureate head of Septimius Severus to right, around IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, rev. around S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI, Septimius in military dress on horse walking to left holding spear, (S.6365, RIC 415, RSC 652). Flan crack, lightly toned very fine and rare.

Ex Marc Melcher Collection. 8 examples in Reka Devnia Hoard, which contained 7256 Septimius Severus denarii. The issue appears to be a copy of a denarius of Trajan issued in 113 depicting his statue in the centre of the Forum.
