JULIUS CAESAR, (assassinated 44 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, struck Feb. - March 44 B.C., (4.14 g), obv. CAESAR DICT PERPETVO around Caesar's veiled head to right, rev. P. SEPVLLI[VS MACER] partially off flan around, Venus standing left, holding Victory and sceptre resting on shield, (S.1414, Cr.480/13, RSC Julius Caesar 39, BMC 4173). Grey tone, slightly off-centred, scratch on obverse forehead, otherwise very fine and scarce in this condition.
This coin shows that Caesar had been named dictator in perpetuity. He was assassinated within two months of its mintage.
