SEXTUS POMPEY (YOUNGER SON OF POMPEY THE GREAT), issued 42-40 B.C., silver denarius, (3.83 g), Sicilian mint, obv. Pompey the great head to right, between capis and lituus, around MAG PI[VS IMP ITER], dotted border, rev. Neptune to left, foot on prow, between the brothers Anapias and Amphinomus, with parents on their shoulders, below CLAS ET ORAE, below [M]ARIT EX SC], dotted border, (S.1392, Cr.511/3a, Syd.1344). Attractive toned coin, with weakness on head and obverse legends, otherwise nearly very fine/good very fine and very scarce.
Ex D.J.Foster Collection and previously from Spink Noble Auction Sale 45 (lot 1768)the Richard A. Williams Collection.
This coinage was struck by Sextus Pompey after the victory over Salvidienus and relates to his acclamation as the "son of Neptune", whilst the representation of the Catanaean brothers may either refer to the title Pius or show that the coins were struck at Catana.
