BYZANTINE WEIGHT, 5th-7th Century, A barrel-shaped spherical commercial weight, 9x10 mm, bronze Sextula (1/6 ounce) weight (4.73 g); cylindrical with a slightly bulging center and with a flat top and bottom. The top bears a center punch flanked by the incuse cut engraved letter **G* a symbol = 1/6 uncia or 3 scripula, similar letters as traces on the bottom side, (cf.Bendall P.8 for symbol and p.25 for similar larger weights and Munz Zentrum Sale XXXVII [8th November 1979, lot 4145 for symbol). Some original metal showing through, very fine and rare.
