VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, indenture on vellum dated 15th March 1828, for release of fifty acres of land and dwelling house at Clarence Plains, to John McKoy, farmer, and his wife Mary of the one part and Joseph Mawle and William Mawle, licenced victuallers, of the second part, also includes receipt of cash and Bills of Exchange to the value of one hundred and fifty pounds from the Mawles to the McKoys, all relevant areas signed by both parties and witnessed by Gamaliel Butler, included on the document is a declaration made by Mary McKoy to the Supreme Court Chief Justice of Van Diemen's Land, John Lewes Pedder, and signed by him, also recorded and signed by John Beamont, Registrar of Deeds. Very fine.
Gamaliel Butler was a prominent lawyer, businessman and later politician. John Beamont contributed to the development of Van Diemen's Land by exploration and was prominent in the affairs of the colony. He was also the first appointment to the position of Registrar of Deeds in 1827.
