VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, several items of correspondence from 1840s, mostly relating to policing matters in the Richmond District, noted one to Chief District Constable J.Bryon at Richmond from the District Constable of Jerusalem regarding stolen property and action to be taken, also noted several letters to Major C.Schaw (see footnote), Police Magistrate for Richmond, including a finely penned 2-page letter by Elizabeth Naylor regarding the circumstances of her eviction from premises at Pittwater by John Gwynn, various other letters. Mostly fine - very fine historic Tasmanian documents. (17)

Major Charles Schaw (1785-1874), served with the British Army in the West Indies, Peninsular War, American Wars, Honduras and then sent to Van Diemen's Land. He was appointed Assistant Police Magistrate administering the District of Bothwell for eight years. In 1841 he was promoted to full Police Magistrate of Richmond remaining in this position for fifteen years.
