CENTENNIAL INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, Melbourne, 1888, in gold (tested at 24ct, 46.1g, 38mm) edge inscribed 'Gd Chmp Prize L.Wool, Greasy Sir W.J.Clarke, Bart.' (C.1888/8). With slight buckle, test cut, very fine.
Sir William John Clarke (1831-1897) first Baronet in the Colony of Victoria, pastoralist, cattle breeder, politician and philanthropist. He was born at Lovely Banks in Van Diemen's Land and educated at Bonwick's Academy, Hobart Town and Whitchurch Grammar School, Shropshire. Returning to Australia in 1850 he spent some years on his father's properties in Victoria before moving to Tasmania to manage estates there, returning again to Victoria in 1860.
