W.H.MEDAL, 1839, in bronze (58mm) by T.Halliday, obverse, triptych of the theatre at Athens, Socrates in prison and Demosthenes on sea-shore, reverse, 'To Encourage a Steady perseverance In/Industry/Courtesy/and/Integrity', '53' in tablet (Forrer II, 390), in original maroon leather case with descriptive booklet also published in 1839; Whitworth Scholarship, 1868, prize medal in bronze (57mm) by J.S.& A.B.Wyon after E.J.Poynter, obverse, bust draped of Sir Joseph Whitworth, inscription around, reverse, a precision machine tool, inscription around and below (BHM 2899, Eimer 1599), edge inscribed 'John A Griffiths 1870', in leather case of issue gilt blocked on lid. Toned, uncirculated. (2)
Joseph Whitwoth (1803-1887) mechanical engineer and public benefactor, developed the 'Whitworth' rifle.
