QUEEN VICTORIA, Siege of Mafeking, in gold (45mm, 18 carat 18CT stamped on edge, 56 grams) F. Bowcher and Spink & Son Ltd. (not listed in BHM, reverse is as the obv of 3677). Rim bruise, otherwise nearly FDC and excessively rare if not unique.
Ex late Ken Johnson (of Cape Town) Collection. This medal is sad to have been given to Barder- Powell by the Queen. It then passed to colonel Sir Frank Johnson, uncle of Ken Johnson. The Prime Minister advised Queen Victoria that it was inapproprate to issue a medal with her effigy combined with that of 'her boy- friend'. It is thought only four were struck.
