PHOENICIA, Arados, (2nd-1st century B.C., but dated year 192 = 68/67 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (14.81 g), obv. turreted and veiled bust of Tyche to right dotted border, rev. Nike standing to left, holding aphlaston and palm-branch, **ARADIWN* to right, to left Bqp (year 192 = 68-67 B.C.), over "aleph" over **AS*, all within laurel wreath, (S.5992, BMC 266, Kromann "Studies in Ancient History and Numismatics to Rudi Thomsen p.112 notes 7 specimens of this date and variety). Toned, slightly off centred on the reverse, good very fine and very scarce.
Ex Decades Collection.
The study of this series of tetradrachms of Arados by Kromann in Thomsen as above shows that these civic tetradrachms began in 138/7 B.C., and continued until 44/3 B.C. She records only about 150 examples in her extensive survey.
