RELIGIOUS STATE OF ENGLAND, 1688, cast bronze (57mm) by Jan Smeltzing, obv. a hand from heaven holds a scroll over a pedestal inscribed Britannia, with a dove, a chalice, wafer and rosary, around LIBERTAS CONSCIENTIAE HOC MONILI ORNATA. Reverse a dog wearing a rosary tramples on books, around RES IMMODERATA CUPIDO EST. MDCLXXXVIII. (MI.620/35). Very fine and rare.

Ex Glendinnings 2001.

The obverse symbolizes the tolerance of Britain with the symbols of the Church of England, Rome and the Nonconformists. The reverse symbolizes the desire of James II to trample on liberties, devour his coronation oath and remove the Test and Penal Laws.
