COUNTY OF BENDIGO AGRICULT(URA)L. & Horticult(ura)l. Society, undated (1880) in silver (38mm) by Ernst A.Altmann Melbourne, reverse with Society name in Gothic lettering, inscribed 'John Buncle/Melbourne/1st Prize/for/Chaff Cutter/ Oct 27th 1880'. Some hairlines, otherwise extremely fine.

John Buncle (1822?-1889), manufacturer and inventor, born at Edinburgh, Scotland. He served apprenticeships in engineering and later worked with several firms designing steam engines and locomotives. He was chief draughtsman and designer at the London and North Western Railway workshops at Crewe, Cheshire, England. He arrived in Melbourne in December 1852. The following year he established his own business and became well known as an inventor of 'extensive' farming techniques. He was a Commissioner to the International Exhibitions in Melbourne in 1880 and 1888 and sat on the committee of inquiry into the construction of the Murray River Bridge at Euchuca, Victoria.
