As soon as war was declared in 1939, this unit was formed in Australia by the many thousands of New Zealanders living in Sydney. The President of the unit was Mr A.R.Cameron. Members were given training in first aid, home nursing and air-raid precautions as well as forming sewing bees to make various items of clothing for the comfort of soldiers. The headquarters of the unit in Sydney was at the New Zealand Association's rooms.
