SICILY, Selinus, silver didrachm, 520-500 B.C., (8.950 gm), obv. selinon leaf, rev. incuse square divided into ten triangles (S.730, ANS MN 33, Pl. 1 No.13 This Coin). Very fine and rare.
Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 99 (lot 3313); Sale 86 (lot 3272) and Sale 53 (lot 2046), coming from and the Selinus Archaic Silver Hoard.
This hoard contained 35 coins of Selinus. The most extensive find of this mint, coming as a hoard of 165 silver coins and four silver ingots. The hoard was buried between 510-500 B.C. and is consequently the earliest of its kind ever found in Sicily. The obverse and reverse dies on this coin are die linked to the earliest coins known from that hoard and this coin provides the die link through the obverse die.
