SICILY, Syracuse, (c.480-475 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.16 g), obv. slow quadriga driven to right by male charioteer, Nike flying left crowning charioteer, rev. **SUPAKOSION around to right, head of Artemis-Arethusa to right, hair slightly waved and turned up behind under diadem of beads, four dolphins around, (cf.S.913, Boehringer 156 same dies (obverse 70, reverse 108 dies), SNG ANS 44 [same dies]). Scratches on the exergue line on the obverse, reverse with attractive full portrait of Artemis-Arethusa, otherwise nearly extremely fine and very rare.
Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 77 (lot 3113) and Sale 56 (lot 1786).
Boehringer notes only 1 specimen from these dies and this in the Berlin collection, however another appears in the collection of the American Numismatic Society. This is possibly the third known specimen.
