SYRIA, Antioch Mint, Trajan, (A.D. 98-117), silver tetradrachm (14.73 g), issued 113, obv. Trajan laureate head to right supported by eagle standing right and club, around AYTOKP KAIC NEP TPAIANOC CEB **GERM DAK, rev. laureate bust of Herakles to right, around **DHMARC EX I*Z **UPAT*S, (S.-, RPC 3547, Wruck 165, Prieur 1517, McAlee 462, BMC 18). Weakness in reverse legend, otherwise good very fine.
Ex I.S. Wright, Sydney, Status Auction Sale 242, October 25-26, 2007 (lot 8071).
The issue has been reattributed from Tyre to Antioch based on the researches of Prieur, Butcher and McAlee (see RPC p.444-5 and Butcher 'Coins of Roman Syria' p.81).
