MACEDON, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), gold stater, (8.532 grams), Lampsacus mint, issued 323-317 B.C., obv. head of Athena to right in crested Corinthian helmet, ornamented with serpent, rev. Nike standing to left, holding wreath in outstretched hand, buckle (S reversed) and eagle head? below in left field, to right **ALEXANDPOU, (cf.S.6702; Price 1368, M.620, Thompson NS 19 No.200 [same dies]). Nearly extremely fine and very rare.
The other known example from these dies is illustrated by Thompson and it comes from the Marasesti Hoard (IGCH 958). It was listed by Poenaru Bordea. In all, Thompson in 1991, knew of only four example with this symbol (two of which were reversed buckles).
