CHINA, Western Zhou (Chou) Dynasty, State of Qi, round cash with square hole (350 - 300 B.C.), Pre-Qin type (Qi united China in 221 B.C.) "Ban Liang" (half ounce), two long characters either side, (131.53 g), diameter 71 mm, (cf.Hartill 7.1 [R8]). Fine - nearly very fine, with heavy dirt encrustation, a very rare large variety.

Ex Patrick J. O'Rourke Collection and previously from Curio City, Beijing in September 2004.

The first coin is one of the earlist cash type coins, not listed in any major works, possibly a tomb piece. Such a large coin of greater value for ancestors or a good luck piece to be placed in a home. Ban Liang means half a liang, (Hartill p.83).
