GERMANY, Mittlebau concentration camp, WWII, .50 (half) reichsmark, Series R, numbered on back * 007902 (Schawn & Boling 1035), also on reverse is printed German text translated as 'The cover for this value is deposited with the Central Administration of the SS-Kantinen in the area of Mittelbau. Misrepresentations are punishable by criminal law.' Fine and scarce.
Mittelbau was a concentration camp near Nordhausen in Thuringia, Germany established as a subcamp of Buchenwald to supply labour for manufacturing the V-1 flying bomb and V-2 rocket. In 1944 it became an independent camp with its own subcamps. About one third of prisoners sent to Mittelbau died.
