Bid at live.noble.com.au
SOLD $50
GERMANY, Northern, (Saxony), Heinrich IV, silver pfennig, probably an issue of Meissen (1065-1080), obv. cross with two pellets in each angle, rev. Maltese cross central device, both sides with traces of unreadable legend, (Jensen et al, Denmark's medieval treasure-hoards c1050-1550, Copenhagen 1992, No.323 [p236]). Hammered up edge, otherwise very fine and rare.
The hammered up edge suggests a provenance from Scandinavia as consequently paid to Vikings as 'danegeld'.
